It was a June long weekend, so we decided to make it a wek or so break to FNQ and visit Places such as Port Douglas, Palm Cove, Cairns and the Daintree.
We flew into Cairns and hired a car and headed up to Palm Cove where we were staying. A nice hotel opposite the water with a great pool and bar area. This was to be our base for the next week.
We explored Palm Cove and it's a nice place for a break away. It has good restaurants and cafes, it runs along the beachfront and is an easy drive to Cairns, Port Douglass and the Daintree.
We headed up to visit our friends Steve and Sally who own and run Crocodylus Eco Resort in Cow Bay in the Daintree. https://www.daintreecrocodylus.com.au/
Steve is a long-time friend from university and we have known him since 1980. His current lifestyle is a far cry from the science degree that he attained back then!
If you're into eco tourism, then this place is definitely the "go".
Expect to see bird life galore, spiders as big as your hand, crocodiles, wild boar (at night), cassowaries, eagles and lots of spectacular mountains and waterways.
We spent a few days with Steve and Sally and they took us around the Daintree and on a croc tour as well. The crocs are everywhere and we spotted some eating just on the edge of the bank. The crocs can be heard muching down on mud crabs!
No swimming around here! Don't even think about walking close to the waters edge!
We did a couple of day trips from alm Cove also. Port Douglas is a place we have been to before but is still worth going to again and this time we hired a boat and did some exploring on the water. It was a fun day. Driving to Port Douglas, we spotted a huge Wedged Tailed Eagle sitting on the top of a telegraph pole and it's nest atop the pole opposite it. Both the eagle and nest were huge.
We also drove up to the vilage of Kuranda, visited a coffee platation and other places of interest. There are markets in Kuranda and a spectacular scenic railway up and skyway goldola down.... and the views are spectacular.
Our last night was spent in Cairns. We walked around the foreshore and stumbles across the Prawn Star. It is a fishing trawler that is set up as a restaurant and serves the freshly caught seafood. We could not resist and we sat at a table with a number of others from all over the world as well as Australia. It was a great evening and a great find! If you're ever in Cairns, go to the Prawn Star https://www.facebook.com/PrawnStarCairns/
Sadly, this holiday came to an end, but we had a heap of fun and reconnected with old friends as well.
